A new passion in an old art…film {Southern Minnesota portrait photographer}

I started my photography passion seven years ago and with a DSLR. The only experience I had with film was my old cameras as a child and those were all automatic exposure.

I recently decided to dive into film. Why do you ask? Why would I want to spend money getting rolls of film scanned back to me when I have digital equipment that shows me my work immediately? I adore the look of film. Plain and simple. It takes me back to a simpler time, when things weren’t so fast. When that roll was full and it began to wind up in the camera, I had a grin from ear to ear. That feeling, that sound, I was a child again.

I shot this whole roll in manual mode without a light meter. This is risky. I just got one so I am hoping my next set will be even better!

I love my old dog. This makes him look older, but I still love it. 

I had to be patient waiting for these scans and I was ok with that. I sent them to a lab that was willing to let me know how to improve, and I knew I needed it. I honestly thought that every frame was either going to be all black or all white, I had no idea what was coming. 

That’s the fun part of film too, you never know what you are going to get! 

I took some photos at a recent wedding and adore this image. The colors, the grain. Swoon. 

I know now that I should have bumped up my exposure. I still love the feel of this image. 

I am so thankful that my neighbor let me use her film camera for the time being. I am not familiar with Nikon, so that is a learning curve in itself. I do have my eyes on an old Canon and I am pretty sure it is going to be purchased this weekend.

She was moving and it still turned out ok! 

From now on, expect to see me with a film camera at almost every session and wedding from now on. I am doing this for me for now, to do something different and to push myself creatively. These images I am taking won’t always be included in galleries at this time, but maybe someday. 

I encourage you to do something this weekend that you have always wanted to do and either didn’t think you could, or haven’t had time to try. You never know what will happen.
